"The
woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to
go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep." Robert Frost
"No
doubt a brain and shoes are essential for marathon success, although if it
comes down to a choice, pick the shoes. More people finish marathons with
no brain than with no shoes." - Don Kardong
1999 Top of Utah Marathon, Logan, Utah, Blacksmith Fork Canyon. Crossing
half-way line at 13.1 miles in 1:44:30. Under Boston qualifying time. But
then there was the 2nd half... Note young, athletic individual I JUST PASSED.

This is the certificate for the best race of my life. 2:36 too slow for
Boston qualifying time. Close, but no enchilada!

"It
is horrible, yet fascinating, this struggle between a set purpose and an utterly
exhausted frame." - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
"Far
better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though
checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither
enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows
not victory nor defeat." - Theodore Roosevelt
"If
I faltered, there would be no arms to hold me and the world would be a cold
and forbidding place." - Roger Banister, on the final seconds of the
world's first sub 4-minute mile.

"You
have to forget your last marathon before you try another. Your mind can't
know what's coming." - Frank Shorter
If
people relied solely on reason, they would not run marathons. But we are not
creatures of reason, we are creatures of passion. We need reason, of course,
to steer the ship. But if the winds of passion are not in our sails, all the
steering in the world would get us nowhere. - Noel Carroll
